The Graham dynamometer instrument was invented by Englishman George Graham (1674-1751) and later improved by fellow Londoner John Desaguliers (1683-1744), the Graham- desaguliers dynamometer was designed to determine maximum force.

The Graham dynamometer instrument was later improved by fellow Londoner John Desaguliers (1683-1744), who also wrote about optics, steam energy, electricity and magnetism. The dynamometer later revolutionized by a French academy member named Leroy who used a spiral spring with an attached graduated rod that terminated above into a globe. The applied pressure to the globe made the rob sink into the tube, therefore marking the force obtained by compressing the spring.
